Bring a structured question list

A survey and sea trial move quickly. Write down questions in advance so you do not forget them while watching gauges, handling lines, or listening to the engine.

Ask about operation

  • Does the engine reach expected rpm?
  • Are temperatures and pressures stable?
  • Do electronics, pumps, lights, windlass, trim tabs, and steering operate correctly?
  • Are there unusual vibrations, smells, alarms, or leaks?

Ask about ownership

  • What maintenance is due next?
  • Are service records available?
  • What is included in the sale?
  • Are there open warranty claims, liens, or title issues?

After the trial

Use findings to decide whether to proceed, renegotiate, request repairs, or walk away. A clean process is more important than rushing into a boat that does not match your use case.
