Survey and Sea Trial Questions Buyers Should Bring
CD
Captain DeskOperations & SeamanshipJune 15, 2026
Bring a structured question list
A survey and sea trial move quickly. Write down questions in advance so you do not forget them while watching gauges, handling lines, or listening to the engine.
Ask about operation
- Does the engine reach expected rpm?
- Are temperatures and pressures stable?
- Do electronics, pumps, lights, windlass, trim tabs, and steering operate correctly?
- Are there unusual vibrations, smells, alarms, or leaks?
Ask about ownership
- What maintenance is due next?
- Are service records available?
- What is included in the sale?
- Are there open warranty claims, liens, or title issues?
After the trial
Use findings to decide whether to proceed, renegotiate, request repairs, or walk away. A clean process is more important than rushing into a boat that does not match your use case.
